Pinterest-Worthy Mom #Fail

I made a New Year Resolution to try 1 new thing a week. I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone and find new hobbies/interests.

Where to start?  The first place I turn for inspiration is Pinterest so it isn’t any surprise I found a “how to” on making a smash cake for a baby’s birthday.  My grand plan was to make Henry’s first birthday cake.

I thought to myself, This will be easy! I got this!

Secretly, I aspire to be a Pinterest-worthy mama and figured a step by step guide from OneLittleProject Blog seemed easy enough to get started.

BUT…my cake for Henry looked like a mess.  It was so bad that my sister thought it was a cheese ball.

Because I worked on it for three days and have too much pride to throw it away and buy one, I decided to “fix”it.  I used a spoon dipped in hot water to smooth the icing and then added crushed faux Oreo.  I cut out a photo of my sweet little man’s face and taped it to a coffee stir stick. Ta-Dah!

Yes, I realize his little cake was sad.  My thinking was that it would get smashed anyway, given that I was handing it over to a one-year-old. But much to my surprise, Henry didn’t care about the cake.

He wouldn’t even touch it.  I guess he thought it looked too sad and pathetic to eat.

But the 2-year-old neighbor kid was over for the party and politely asked if he could have a slice of “the cake” to which I responded, sure!  His mom and dad reported back the next day that he loved the cake and wished he had more! Oh man!

That is one strange story!  The tale of the ugly cake…

I think I found my inspiration for my first children’s book! {insert sarcasm here}
